Merry Christmas!

It’s the day after Christmas, less than a week till a new year is upon us. The big news is that I got an iPad. It’s more awesome than I expected, very pleased so far. Some of the news/magazine apps are really nice. Flipboard is really cool, and just got app of the year from apple. Typing on it is not to bad, I’m using it to do this update even! It’s going to take a bit to get used to typing fast on it but the auto correct is helping a lot.

In other news i saw True Grit Friday, it was great. The acting, the cinematography, everything was very well done. I highly suggest it over your holiday over anything else that’s out.

TV Shows and you!

It’s been a while since I’ve talked any TV so here we go, even though it’s almost the end of the season for alot of shows.

Shows you should be watching:

Chuck – This show really is awesome, I’ve watched it since the first episode and it just keeps getting better.

FlashForward – Some people are saying it’s the new Lost, I think it’s better personally because people dont survive plane crashes like that. Nevertheless a really fun show to watch and some mind blowing going on almost weekly at this point.

Lost – I’ve never been a fan, although I did watch the first season it seems to have gotten out of control.  That being said it’s almost over why not see if they can make sense of it.  I still say it was the Cloverfield monster or a dream the entire time.

Fringe – Another JJ Abrams show like Lost only a ton of crazy science and mystery.  A really good show with good acting and a really interesting overall storyline.

CBS Mondays – How I Met your Mother/Big Bang Theory JUST THOSE 2! The others absolutely blow, but oh my god are these two amazing.  HIMYM is just as funny today as the first season, and BBT has turned into the Sheldon show which is awesome.  And this week Wil Wheaton comes back on BBT it should be epic.

Human Target – A pretty good action show, good actors and a decent story, this week should really help the story out alot and give the back ground on the main charactor.  If nothing else watch for Jackie Earle Haley, hes amazing in this show.

Scrubs – It’s the same show, but still new and still funny.  I’ve watched every episode since the start good and bad and enjoyed it all.  The new characters are a fun twist on a old favorite of mine.  Plus Eliza Coupe is both crazy and beautiful so watch it or she’ll beat you up.

Others you could watch if your bored but not a must see are 24, Parenthood(actually a pretty good show), House(somewhat fallen from what it once was), NCIS(always a good watch) and I’m sure there are some random others but not on right now.

Oh also, if you have not watched White Collar (USA) go to Hulu and try to watch some, just got picked up for a 2nd season, a really funny show with great actors and story.

In great news it looks like Charlie Sheen is leaving 2 and a half men!  Hopefully they will stop the terrible show and kill everyone involved in it.  Even hotshots doesn’t make up for this show.

Just a side note, I’m really bad at watching tv when it’s actually on but I do try for the shows that I really enjoy like Chuck, FlashForward and Human Target because they need the ratings or they will get canned.  So I suggest you try to watch them on TV at the normal times as well! I know we all love Hulu but still, if we dont show up on time they will go away since the current rating system is absolutely terrible.

And just as a bonus, NHL Playoffs start weds!  Go PENS and GO RedWings!  I know this is a terribly evil thing to say as most people who are fans of one or the other hate the other.  I dont care I like them both.  RW are a 5 seed, I feel bad for the 4 seed Phoenix they are playing.  Also Pens are a 4 seed playing Ottawa, should be a decent series but I expect both the Pens and the Wings to have a pretty easy first round.  And if you have not seen it look for the Pens dirty player Cooke getting KO’d in 1 punch on Saturday.  Was amazingly funny, I love the pens but that kid does some cheap shots and needs to get a wake up call.  Hopefully the punch to his face was just that.

Apple Vs Google, Iphone/touch/pad vs Android. Haters gonna Hate!

Well, the time has finally come for Apples Iphone/pad/touch to get Multitasking!  Yesterday Steve Jobs took a step into his time machine to 3 years or so ago when they put the first iPhone out to announce it has Multitasking.  Steve said “Yes Apple may be late to the game, but we’ll also be the last.” Which is kind of a silly thing to say, yes they are late but what they have looks to be a solid way to multitask if it works.  But the last?  That’s like saying the iPhone is the last phone you’ll ever need…unless it’s not a 3GS or newer version because then the “hardware just wont do multitasking”.  Let me say this before I go any further, I’m not an apple fanboy, and I’m not a android fanboy.  I really enjoy both sides, and think they both make great devices.

Both sides have made mistakes along the way, I still think if the iPhone was unlocked to any network, and multitasked from the beginning there is a good chance we would not have Android right now.  And Blackberry may be dead other than the corporate uses that the iPhone didn’t have fully covered.  But they locked in with ATT, and it kind of worked, sometimes if you weren’t in a busy area.  So the world domination seeking guys at Google said “Hey! We can totally make an OS for phones and gadgets that will work great and destroy apple leading us to taking over the world” and they did.  It’s been almost 2 years not since the first android device hit, the G1 (which I have) and android is stronger than ever.  I dont think they’ve actually put out that must have device yet, and I think they may never have that one device like the iPhone, but they’ve taken the correct approach for them and it’s working.  They have devices on every major network worldwide, other than china because they are fighting. They are getting a bigger market share every month, and should pass the iPhone fairly soon.  And I believe the best is yet to come, the Nexus one is a nice phone, but I think they can still do better.

The iPhone is an amazing device.  I’ve played with them, had an iTouch, and really think they are a very well made device.  No one can argue against that.  The problem I have is more with Apple themselves, yes there is not much I can do about Steve Jobs being the worst dressed person ever.  But why does he hate competition so much?  Would the iPhone have multitasking coming if there was no Android?  I don’t think so because they wouldn’t need to even with everyone complaining since there was no other device out there that did it and did it well.  Android phones are coming out every day with newer and more shiny devices pushing what the OS and the hardware can handle.  This has made Apple work harder to keep themselves in the lead and it’s great, because the end user/fanboys are the ones who get the benefits in the end.  And that’s what they wanted right?  Well after making money and taking over the world, putting a great product out is what every company wants.  So why file lawsuits against everyone else who makes a product that competes?  Just make yours better and then stand back and watch as the rest try to keep up.

I’ve been rambling a lot and not even made the main point of this post, the fanboys.  During the 4.0 event yesterday I was watching the livecast and reading all the twitter updates.  The two sides, android and apple, really hate each other.  Every Apple fanboy post was saying “OMFG MULTITASKING LOOKS SO AMAZING”, while Android was mostly “Hey Apple, welcome to the party, where have you been?”.  Many of the android devs I follow on twitter were bashing Apple non stop, and I don’t really know why.  They’ve got good ideas at Apple, yes many of them android already has in some shape or form, but that doesn’t mean you can’t accept new ideas and work them into your custom android builds if they are awesome.  In the same way iphone fanboys were acting as though multitasking was this amazing new idea that no one has ever seen or done, are you really that dumb?  I don’t understand why the extremes on both sides with no one in the middle.  Like me.  I love android and I love iphone, if I had the money I would have both phones no doubt.  The only logical stance I remember hearing recently was Kevin Rose, who admittedly is a huge apple fanboy.  But he loves the android also, and has both an iphone and nexus one.  And even said on Diggnation that he was thinking about using the N1 as his main phone and iphone just for the apps etc he likes to use on it.  Wow, logic from a fanboy, amazing.  That being said, I’m pretty sure Kevin had to change his pants after getting his iPad and saying it’s the best device ever.  I don’t know, maybe it is, I can’t afford one.  But still, he’s about the only fanboy that can accept other things that I’ve seen.

Moral of the story is, people need to stop being bitches, both sides.  Devs get over thinking your this amazing person that is doing things no one else is for the Android, unless your Cyanogen, who was the real breakout dev, you’re just making the same thing 30 other devs are.  And Apple, stop being afraid of competition, without it you wouldn’t even be here.  Also for the love of god Steve Jobs get rid of the acid wash jeans and shirt from 1960, I get it, you’re a hipster.  Now stop.  http://www.fonearena.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/apple_steve.jpg

New Laptop and stuff.

I’ve really slacked off on this thing, please forgive me.  Alas here I am to bring the news and funny.  Not to much has happened recently other than work.  I got a new laptop, sold my macbook pro, watched a lot of movies, started playing hockey again, and maybe more stuff I don’t remember.

So lets start at the new laptop/sold old MBP!  As much as I did enjoy the macbookpro the 13in just felt underpowered.  I’m not sure what it was really, maybe lack of ram since it only had 2gb, or the processor, maybe even me just expecting much more from it than what it was since it was a “Pro” version.  Nevertheless it just wasn’t what I wanted overall.  Yea I could do some video on it and such and man o man did I click on some links I might not on my desktop…well lets be honest I’ll click any link it only takes 20 minutes to reformat.  But I couldn’t play games, obviously, and I did have a slightly douche feeling just having one.  So, back I am now on my Asus laptop.  So far I’m really enjoying it, it has a Nvidia GT320m 1gb video card which is better than my 8800GTS on my desktop, 4gb of ram, and a decent processor.  It plays TF2/CSS/AION all pretty well.  No more lugging my massive desktop down to tims for lans etc unless I’m going to be there for a week again haha.  I plan on acquiring some video editing software for both my new laptop and desktop and get back to that soon.

On the movie front I just saw Clash of the Titans, not as bad as the critics had made it out to be IMO.  That being said I did see it in 2d not 3d since I knew ahead that they had done all the filming without any 3d tech/cameras and added it in as an afterthought.  Which you can tell from what I hear pretty badly.   I found this great article about it http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/technology/news/e3ib6c66237fa7a658dc74bc85f7f81d858 It gives a good overview on whats going on and why there is going to be a big fight over them charging extra for a 3d movie thats not even shot in 3d.  I’m a fan of some 3d movies.  Paying extra for it I’m not but there’s not much to be done about that right now, the big companies making movies and even tv/music really have no grasp on whats going on in the tech world so these things aren’t going to change soon.  Still, I like 2d movies, yes Avatar looked amazing but the story sucked.  Perhaps if someone brings up a quality story, good acting and 3d that will change things but right now I’m content with the way we have it.

There were a bunch of other movies, none of which really had an impact other than the amazing RiffTrax (Mystery Science Theater 3000 guys) viewing of Twilight we had at the Theater de Tim.  Really those guys are hilarious, and they’ve got a ton of other new movies and classics not just b movies they’ve done the MST3K thing to.  I plan on watching a bunch more of them in the future, really the best way to watch a movie that you know is going to suck or a classic like Star Wars and just have a bunch of good laughs.

In more personal news I started playing hockey again at South Metro, and am really enjoying it.  It’s been years since I played but was bored one day and decided to go buy some gear from Play It Again and got almost a full set for dirt cheap.  It does get expensive playing 4-5 days a week especially if i do Stick&Puck plus Drop-in Hockey but it’s still a ton of fun and good exercise.  The only drawback so far is that most of the time I’m stuck playing with kids not even 16 which is kinda odd, not because they are young just that I feel like a old man playing with a bunch of high school kids.  Really need a few of my old hockey buddies to step up and start playing, but I doubt that will happen.  Oh and I’ve been playing Racquetball a ton with Thomas, it’s a lot of fun also and being it’s at the Gym I dont have to pay any extra and they are open super late so we can go at 11pm and play for 2 hours.

The last thing I’ll talk about here is something tech related since I’m a huge nerd.  The iPad!  All hail Jobs! Right?  Ok but really, I’m not a complete apple fanboy since I did sell my Macbook because it didn’t preform, but I do like their products for the most part.  That being said, I’ve not touched an iPad but I’ve read reviews and seen people with them, it does look really nice.  A game changer?  Eh, that’s to be determined.  It still can’t multitask yet, so you cant run AIM and surf the web/read a book etc at the same time.  That’s really needed IMO to be an amazing device, but still it does look really nice.  There are a bunch of other tablets coming here in the next few months some look promising but are mostly just startups that will never even produce a real product.  Then theres the HP Slate that may or may not be $550 bucks out the box and doesn’t really out spec the iPad, as the specs I’ve seen.  I think it looks to be a hugely disappointing but we’ll see if they pull something out in the end.  There are a few other nice looking tablets that are random and look fantastic on paper but again may never actually get made.  Either way, they are just a toy right now, at least to me.  Yea they would be nice while watching tv on the couch to chat with or surf the web but being completely productive devices is yet to be seen/proven.  If they put a FinalCutExpress version out for the iPad that would be something I’m interested in.  Time will tell.

I may post again tonight, there are some other things I’m sure I can talk about.  I’m thinking about writing a short story maybe, webcast perhaps, random crap.  Also if you dont already, watch Diggnation, it’s an awesome show and something I wish I could be a part of, but would really like to make a webcast show in the same general type.  Ok ordering lunch, being awesome, trying to avoid any work.

Sunday, bloody Sunday.

I ment to do this a few days ago but I got distracted.  It happens, but now I’m watching 24 and decided to start up again and see if i cant knock this out.  Movie reviews at some point in here might contain spoilers but I’ll try to keep them out or at least tag them.

But first, the events of Christmas and New Years!  Pretty laid back christmas went up to the parents on the eve, had one of the best christmas eves ever at gmas house.  No family fights lots of drinking and fun, was a good time with family.  Xmas day got up opened gifts at the parents then jetted back to the apt and grabbed everything and took off to Tims house in KY!  Had my TV/computer/clothes for a week and stayed with him and his pup Doug.  We had a blast, lots of drinking and food fun and watched a ton of movies/TopGear on his 120inch screen projector of awesomeness!  Really, it’s quite nice 1080 movies from 10 feet away on a 10 foot screen is pretty nice.  All and all it was a good week, a nice relaxing time off from work which I desperately needed.

As for movies, off the top of my head the ones I watched and enjoyed were: The Producers, Pirate Radio, (500) Days of Summer, No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Inside Man, and a bunch others but those left a good taste in my mouth.  I’m just going to hit on a few here since I don’t feel like writing for hours.  At least about this stuff.  So to start, (500) Days of Summer, a sarcastic love story that is just amazingly well done and acted.  And I don’t say that just because I may or may not be in love with Zooey Deschanel.  It really was a fun movie to watch, the two main characters play off each other so well.

Next up, The Producers, this came out forever ago and I was 98% sure it was a gay movie that was going to be about gays and be stupid.  Boy was I wrong!  It was an awesome movie that had gays in it about Hitler!  But really, such a funny movie, and quite a good musical all in all.  I should have expected it since It was directed and written by the great Mel Brooks.  The entire reason we watched this was because he was getting an award at the Kennedy Center and we were watching the backstory about him while making steaks.  One thing lead to another and Tim said it was amazing so we watched it.

The only other one that I’ll hit on is No Country For Old Men.  This movie was a huge success as far as money and awards go, alas I refused to watch it at the time it came out.  I’ve done that quite a bit recently with big movies, maybe because the hype is so crazy these days that its overwhelming to go into a movie and take it as serious or unbias when everyone says its the best thing ever or the worst etc.  No Country for Old Men was an amazingly well acted, written, and directed movie.  It did one thing that I really like about movies these days and that’s just tell a story without having it be the normal happy ending or expected finale that you see in almost every movie.  Most writers and directors are afraid I think to kill someone off in a movie or have something not play out with the normal storybook ending.  The Cohen brothers are not those writers at all.  Really I do suggest you watch this and enjoy it.

That’s about all for now, RDJ just won best actor in a comedy movie for Sherlock Holmes and gave a hilarious speech.  I watched the new show on FOX “Human Target” and it was awesome, a lot of really good actors in it and looks to be something to continue to watch.  Oh then 24, I’ve not watched much of 24 but I do enjoy the show, and it has Starbuck on it now so more reason to watch.  Now I’ve just put (500) Days of Summer on, I’m going to finish this orange and head to bed!  Alot of people get tomorrow off for MLKJR day, alas I am not one of them.

New Year!

It’s been a few weeks since I’ve wrote anything here, my bad.  Just going to do a quick few things before I pass out.

First it is a new year!  I’ve never been one for doing resolutions, mostly because I’ll just forget them.  But what the hell!  Here’s a few things I’d like to get done this year:

1.  Get in better shape – Got a gym membership in dec so this is going already

2.  Get more organized – Mostly writing down what i want to do and remembering it, and just getting things together in general.

3.  Write more!!!! – This mean both here and I would like to start writing a short story/book maybe who knows just write more.

4.  Get a podcast going – Pretty simple

5.  Drink more water – obvious

6. Be more social/go out more – I don’t like to go out much mostly cause it costs money but alas I need to.

7. Look into/start my own small buisness or something of the sort

8. Find a job or start doing something I enjoy not something that just gets me by.

9.  Read more

Thats all for now I might add to it but thats just a quick list.  There are a few other things I’d like to do but they are not really resolutions although they might get added.

Aw Snap!

Hi.  This is still here it seems and I’ve neglected it.  Probably because I’ve been busy being awesome and using b words.  Thanksgiving happened.  I’ve watch a metric shit-ton of movies in the last few weeks.  For fun purposes lets see if I can actually remember and list them.  Try to keep up.

KISS KISS BANG BANG, Flashbacks of a Fool, Brick, I’m Reed Fish, Smart People, Interstate 60, Ink, Shrink, In the Company of Men, District B13, A Guide To Recognizing your Saints, Primer, Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day, Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, The Hebrew Hammer, Moon.  Along with  finishing watching all 13 seasons of Top Gear and the first 3 eps of season 14.  Oh and a few eps of The Wire season 1.

Yea, I had alot of free time, not a big deal but it’s easy to watch a few streaming movies before you go to bed or while your bored.  Still have a ton of movies on my instant and dvd queue on netflix not to mention a few movies that are coming out soon I’ll need to see…AVATAR..SHERLOCK MAHFAHKN HOLMES!  Should be a good movie December if these don’t totally suck.

In other news I decided to join the gym my roommate and 4 or more friends are a member of, I’m already paying for it as my shoulders are crazy sore from the first night of lifting.  Of course all of this is to further my abilities to go out with super models and actresses.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m already a big deal and they should understand this and be begging to be in my presence so they can bask in the glory that is me.  But they are illogical and don’t understand this so I’ll have to do more apparently.  Such is life.  Christmas is soon, new PSU/Monitor coming for my desktop computer, pretty excited.  Also I’ll be off work from Christmas Eve until the 3rd or 4th of January whichever is that Monday after New Years.  First semi-vaca i’ve had in quite some time at least for the 2 years that I’ve been working at my current employer.  So…win!

It’s also Thursday so you should be watching FLASHFORWARD tonight because it’s awesome.  Fringe also isn’t bad so check it.  And of course Scrubs came back this week, you can check it out at hulu.com and probably whatever abc’s website is.  It’s different but I still enjoyed it and will leave you with the best line in the episode from Dr. Kelso when talking about some women next to him: “I’ll hit it like a Semi Truck without brakes.”  Awesome.
